WEATHER WARN: Kansas City face in creasing to flood threat overnight

In Kansas City, ongoing rain and thunderstorms are expected to persist into Saturday night, with the severe weather threat diminishing as we progress through the evening, leading to the expiration of the Tornado Watch. However, our main concern shifts to a potential flood threat overnight and into Sunday morning.

A Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 PM Sunday afternoon due to the possibility of several more inches of rain accumulating on top of what has already fallen. The focus for heavier rainfall totals is mainly in the metro area and points to the south, southeast, and east.

As we move into Sunday morning, our weather models indicate the likelihood of more general rain and thunderstorms, but the severe weather risk for early Sunday is minimal. We anticipate a break in the precipitation during midday on Sunday, with the hope of experiencing some dry hours.

Later in the afternoon and early evening, as a cold front approaches from the west, isolated thunderstorms may develop. There is a slight risk of severe weather (level 2 out of 5), with the potential for gusty winds and small hail associated with these storms.

By Sunday night, the weather will finally begin to clear out, with winds shifting from southwest to west as the front moves through. High temperatures should reach the lower 70s on Sunday, and slightly cooler conditions are expected on Monday with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s and lower humidity levels.

Headlines for the weather outlook include the likelihood of strong storms continuing into tonight, transitioning to a heightened flood threat overnight due to persistent rain and storms affecting the same areas. Rain and storms are anticipated to linger into Sunday morning, potentially resulting in additional significant rainfall. As the day progresses on Sunday, the rain should push eastward, but the arrival of a cold front from the west could trigger a few isolated afternoon storms.
