Timberwolves swept the Suns and Coach Chris Finch exited due to a knee injury

In a pivotal playoff matchup, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards quickly recognized a defensive shift by the Phoenix Suns in the third quarter. Instead of facing double teams as in the first half, Edwards found himself primarily in one-on-one situations—a challenge he eagerly accepted.

“It was like they were saying, ‘You’ve got to beat us,'” Edwards remarked. “And I showed them.”

The young star exploded for 31 of his 40 points in the second half, showcasing his scoring prowess alongside Karl-Anthony Towns, who contributed 28 points. Their efforts propelled the Timberwolves to a decisive 122-116 victory over the Suns on Sunday night, securing a sweep of the first-round playoff series.

This series win marked a historic achievement for the Timberwolves, marking their first playoff series victory in 20 years. However, the victory was marred by a significant injury to head coach Chris Finch, who left the game in the late fourth quarter following a collision with Wolves guard Mike Conley. The team later confirmed that Finch had suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee.

Edwards’ standout performance was highlighted by his efficient shooting, connecting on 13 of 23 attempts from the field, including 7 of 13 from beyond the arc. His emphatic one-handed dunk with 2:14 remaining in the game extended Minnesota’s lead to 115-111, effectively sealing the fate of the Suns.

Reflecting on Edwards’ growth throughout the season, Wolves center Rudy Gobert expressed admiration: “We’ve watched him grow, evolve as a leader, as a player, as a man. It’s been fun.”

Despite their efforts, Phoenix failed to mount a comeback, ultimately falling short in the face of Minnesota’s offensive firepower and determination.
