Liverpool’s fading title hopes suffer another setback as they are held to a draw by West Ham

Liverpool’s hopes of clinching the Premier League title took another hit as they were held to a 2-2 draw by West Ham United at London Stadium. Michail Antonio’s late header secured the draw for West Ham, denying Liverpool a crucial victory.

In their previous match, Liverpool suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Everton, with Jarrod Bowen’s goal and assist adding to the Reds’ woes. Bowen’s goal was significant as it marked his 16th Premier League goal of the season, equalling Paolo Di Canio’s record for most goals scored by a West Ham player in a single Premier League season, which was set back in 1999/00.

Liverpool responded well after Bowen’s opener, initially going ahead thanks to an own goal by Alphonse Areola after Andy Robertson’s equalizer in the 48th minute. However, Bowen turned provider once again, setting up Antonio’s crucial header in the 77th minute to level the score.

This draw leaves Liverpool two points behind league leaders Arsenal, pending Arsenal’s match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and one point behind Manchester City, who have two games in hand over Liverpool. Meanwhile, West Ham remains in eighth place in the league standings.

The match started slowly, reflecting the struggles of both teams to find form. Liverpool appealed for a penalty in the 27th minute, but the decision was ruled out due to an offside call against Luis Diaz. However, the game picked up pace as Harvey Elliott and Diaz both threatened the West Ham goal.

Bowen’s goal just before halftime put West Ham in the lead, but Liverpool quickly responded after the break through Robertson’s goal. Liverpool continued to press, and their efforts paid off when Gakpo’s deflected effort from a corner led to an own goal by Areola.

Despite late attempts by Elliott to secure a win for Liverpool, hitting the crossbar with a dipping shot, the match ended in a draw, further complicating Liverpool’s pursuit of the Premier League title.

Reds falter once again

During Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, the team has secured more Premier League victories against Crystal Palace (13) than against West Ham (12). Despite this historical advantage, Liverpool’s recent form has been disappointing, reflecting a season that once held promise but now appears to be unraveling.

At the beginning of March, Liverpool harbored hopes of achieving an unlikely quadruple, but those aspirations have faded. Now, they face a daunting task, relying on slip-ups from Manchester City and Arsenal to have even a slim chance at competing for the title in what could be Klopp’s final campaign with the club.

West Ham struggles at home, but Bowen scores

Jarrod Bowen’s impact against Liverpool this season was notable, having previously scored against them in both the Premier League and EFL Cup. He achieved a rare feat by becoming only the second West Ham player, after Geoff Hurst in 1964/65, to score in three separate games against Liverpool in a single campaign.

Bowen’s well-taken headed goal provided relief for the home crowd but was ultimately not enough to secure victory, leaving West Ham with just one win from their last nine Premier League matches at home. This concerning home form could be detrimental to David Moyes’ side, as they currently trail seventh-placed Newcastle United by four points, despite Newcastle having played one game less. This gap in form may ultimately hinder West Ham’s ability to achieve a higher league finish this season.
