The Lions traded up from No. 29 to No. 24 to choose 21-year-old Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold, who was considered the best cornerback in this year’s draft class by several draft experts. Terrion Arnold was selected by the Dallas Cowboys. Arnold was the top cornerback on the Lions’ draft board, according to general manager Brad Holmes.

Holmes said, “I’m beyond thrilled with how tonight unfolded,” following the first round’s conclusion on Thursday. “We were fortunate that the best football player (on our board) lined up with an area where we were looking to add depth, particularly at cornerback.”
After selecting Brian Branch in the second round of the previous draft, Lions general manager Brad Holmes has selected an Alabama cornerback twice in a row.
The Lions gave up their 29th overall selection and their third-round pick (No.73) in order to move up to the 24th pick. In exchange, they received a seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft.

In an effort to improve their 27th-ranked pass defense, Detroit strengthened their cornerback group this summer by signing Amik Robertson in free agency and obtaining veteran Carlton Davis through a trade. Now part of this new secondary, along with Robertson, Emmanuel Moseley, Kindle Vildor, and other cornerbacks, is Terrion Arnold, the Lions’ first-round selection.
“He’s a competitive edge for our group,” defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Deshea Townsend said of Arnold’s pick.

Arnold’s remarkable football IQ and ball skills were recognized by Townsend during the pre-draft assessment process. Before the draft, Arnold traveled to Detroit and spent time at the NFL Scouting Combine with the team. Brad Holmes, general manager, said that Arnold’s pro day demonstrated his extraordinary skills.
Holmes remarked, “He welcomes challenges.” “He has a tenacious mentality, physicality, and is continuously improving.” This summary highlights Arnold’s bright future and how well he fits within the defensive scheme of the Lions.

Terrion The Lions believe that Arnold’s ability to follow and locate the football is a great tool that will translate well to the NFL. During the previous season, he led the SEC in interceptions (five) and passes defended (17), establishing himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the country. Arnold added 6.5 tackles for loss in addition to his 63 tackles. Remarkably, during his collegiate tenure, he played 25 games, yet he defended 26 passes.

“I think of myself as a shutdown corner,” Arnold said in a Zoom call after he was chosen. Being traded up by Brad means a lot to me because I went into the draft with a chip on my shoulder. I’ll demonstrate the reasoning for his action.”
The first defensive player selected at No. 15 (UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu by the Indianapolis Colts) made the selection process historic. The Lions had anticipated an offense-heavy draft, especially in the early first round. Teams looking for defensive reinforcements, like the Lions, were able to profit from this. In a position of necessity, Arnold emerged as the top player on their selection board.

Arnold played inside at Alabama, but he was predominantly an outside cornerback there. He is a promising addition to the Lions’ defense as they look to strengthen their secondary for the next campaign because of his outstanding statistics and adaptability.
