This result confirmed Kolkata Knight Riders’ top-two finish in the league with 19 points from 13 games, securing them a place in the Qualifier 1. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans, last year’s runners-up and the 2022 champions, are now officially out of the playoff race, having garnered only 11 points from 13 matches.

The toss for the match, scheduled at 7:00 PM, did not take place due to persistent lightning, followed by a light drizzle that gradually intensified. The match was scheduled for a potential start until 10:56 PM, aiming for a five-over contest. However, the match officials ultimately decided to abandon the game due to the worsening rain conditions and a wet outfield. This abandonment marked the first such occurrence in this year’s IPL.

Phil Salt, Kolkata’s opener, commented on their team’s mindset amidst the rain delay, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus and determination, as stressed by their mentor Gautam Gambhir. Kolkata Knight Riders had already secured their place in the playoffs after defeating Mumbai Indians in their previous fixture.

In the IPL standings, Rajasthan Royals hold the second position with 16 points from 12 games, followed closely by defending champions Chennai Super Kings with 14 points from 13 matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore are in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Lucknow Super Giants, with 12 points from 12 games, are still in contention for a playoff spot, while Delhi Capitals, with 12 points from 13 matches, are virtually out of contention.

The rain-disrupted match in Ahmedabad left thousands of fans disappointed at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is known for its massive capacity. The captains eventually shook hands without even proceeding for the toss after enduring nearly five hours of incessant rain.

Gujarat Titans, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, who clinched the IPL title in their inaugural season back in 2022 under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, now find themselves alongside Mumbai Indians and the bottom-placed Punjab Kings, all eliminated from contention for this year’s IPL title.

Kolkata Knight Riders, captained by Shreyas Iyer, have been the standout team this season with 10 wins and 19 points from 13 matches, leading the league ahead of Rajasthan Royals.

With four teams vying for three remaining playoff spots, including defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the competition for the IPL playoffs is heating up, promising an exciting climax to the season.

Overall, it has been a disappointing campaign for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, especially considering their past successes as champions and runners-up in previous seasons.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders have secured their spot in the first Qualifier

Amidst a backdrop of fireworks illuminating the night sky, signaling the conclusion of the Titans’ home leg, the Gujarat Titans players embarked on a lap around the ground as a gesture of appreciation towards the loyal crowd who stayed despite the rain.

Despite the persistent rain, many enthusiastic fans remained hopeful for some cricket action.

In a significant turn of events, Gujarat Titans have now been officially eliminated from the tournament, while Kolkata Knight Riders have secured a coveted top-two finish.

In a touching moment post-match, the captains exchanged ribbons as part of the Titans’ breast cancer awareness initiative, followed by a handshake signifying the end of the match and a respectful nod to the tournament’s broader themes and causes.
