Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten streak extended to an impressive 49 matches as they faced AS Roma in the Europa League semifinal second leg, ultimately drawing 2-2. Despite falling behind 2-0, Xabi Alonso’s squad displayed incredible resilience by scoring two late goals to level the match, surpassing Benfica’s previous record from 1963-1965 for the longest unbeaten run in post-World War II European football.

The German side advanced to the Europa League final with a 4-2 aggregate victory and is now set to meet Atalanta on May 22nd. Leverkusen’s comeback against Roma epitomized their characteristic style, overcoming early setbacks including two Roma penalties, only for Josip Stanisic to net the equalizer in the 97th minute.

Xabi Alonso’s men have already conquered the Bundesliga and now aim to add both the Europa League and German Cup to their honors, potentially achieving a historic feat by completing an undefeated season alongside European competition. Formerly known as ‘Neverkusen’ due to their Bundesliga title drought, Leverkusen’s late-game heroics have earned them a new moniker, ‘Neverlusen’, highlighting their ability to overturn matches in crucial moments.

Their dominance in the final stages of games is evident, with Leverkusen outscoring opponents 32-5 from the 80th minute onward and an astonishing 14-0 after the 90th minute, converting five matches into wins and three into draws during their 49-match unbeaten streak, winning 40 of these games.

This season stands as one of the finest in European football history, with Leverkusen pursuing an invincible treble. Xabi Alonso’s commitment to lead the team into the next season underscores their ongoing narrative as they prepare to face Bochum and Augsburg in the Bundesliga, Kaiserslautern in the DFB Pokal, and they will face Atalanta in the Europa League final.

The quest for perfection continues for Leverkusen, who have not suffered defeat since May 27, 2023, maintaining an unblemished record throughout the season.
