President Joe Biden addressed rumors about the future of his reelection campaign and criticized the media for what he perceived as giving Republican Donald Trump a “free pass” during an energetic rally on Friday night at a Detroit high school gymnasium.
In response to some Democratic Party members suggesting that Biden should step aside after a subpar debate performance two weeks ago, the crowd of around 2,000 at Renaissance High School chanted “Don’t you quit” as he took the stage.
When Biden mentioned Trump, the crowd responded with chants of “Lock him up,” reminiscent of a slogan from Trump rallies during the 2016 presidential campaign when Trump and his supporters called for the imprisonment of Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“I am running. And we’re going to win,” Biden confidently told the crowd.
The Democratic incumbent vowed to reveal more about Trump, claiming the press had failed to do so adequately. He labeled Trump a convicted criminal and a national threat, highlighting the Republican’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Biden warned that another four years under Trump would be “deadly serious.”
“The press — and they’re good people up there — they’ve been hammering me,” Biden said.
“I make a lot of mistakes,” he acknowledged as the crowd booed the journalists covering the rally. “I sometimes mix up names. I might call someone Charlie instead of Bill. But guess what? It’s a free pass for Donald Trump.”
Biden criticized the media’s focus on his verbal mistakes. The previous night, after a NATO summit in Washington, Biden had mistakenly referred to his opponent as “Vice President Trump” and called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “President Putin,” confusing him with the Russian leader.
“Trump declared Putin a genius and that it was amazing when he invaded Ukraine. I’m not making this up. “What on earth is happening?” On Friday, Biden inquired. However, folks would rather to discuss how I mispronounce names. They must have forgotten that Trump referred to Nikki Haley as “Nancy Pelosi.”
“Donald, no more free passes,” Biden declared.
Biden’s campaign visit on Friday marked his fourth trip to Michigan this year and occurred 116 days before the November 5 general election, following a tough debate with former President Trump that drew bipartisan criticism of the Democratic incumbent.
Several Democratic politicians and activists rallied in support of Biden during the event.
Cindy Rudolph, a pastor at Oak Grove AME Church in Detroit, introduced Biden, acknowledging the doubts some had about the commander in chief.
“There are far more who are with you than there are who are against you,” the pastor assured the crowd.
